In this paper we use the AdS/CFT correspondence to refine and then establish a set of old conjectures about symmetries in quantum gravity. We first show that any global symmetry, discrete or continuous, bulk gravity theory with CFT dual would lead an inconsistency CFT, thus there are no AdS/CFT. argue “long-range” gauge symmetry leads boundary whose consistency requires existence dynamical objects which transform all finite-dimensional irreducible representations group. mostly assume internal groups compact, but also give general condition on CFTs, expect be true quite broadly, implies this. extend these results case higher-form symmetries. Finally recently proposed new motivation for weak conjecture more groups, reproducing “convex hull condition” Cheung Remmen.
